Course Description/Outline/Objectives: This class will cover the foundation of our national government, how it has operated in our history, and how it works today. The only way to do this is through a study of The Constitution. It is more than a bunch of faded words on a piece of paper. The Constitution is the foundation for the freedoms protected in our American system of government and is the bedrock upon which all of our laws are to be based. Just as employees of the Treasury Department only look at real bills to learn how to spot counterfeit ones, our students will know enough about The Constitution to be able to spot bad and wrongful laws quickly. They will learn to use the protections in The Constitution to defend their liberties. If I really do my job, they will learn why America is the best country in the world. As a former elected official and active citizen-lobbyist at the state capitol, with on-the-ground experience in passing a state constitutional amendment, I take this class very seriously. And it’s extraordinarily fun!
