(Spring)

Tutor Name:  Katie Hestla

Course Name:  Set Design

Required Text:

Supply Fee:  $60

Minimum Number of Students:  6

Maximum Number of Students:  15

Course Description/Outline/Objectives:

Every scene in a play, movie or television show has a setting, which is created by a set designer. Set designers work with the director to develop a look and style that's effective for the play, film or show they're working on.

In this semester long class, students will gain a working knowledge of the elements of design; and create sketches, renderings, and models of their own scenic designs. They will gain an understanding of stage space, costume design, tools, theatre history, and production management.

In addition, we will use artistic techniques and faux finishes such as carving, painting, ragging, plaster and glazing to create faux finishes to resemble natural elements such as wood and stone, as well as designing and painting murals to accompany the set. Students will demonstrate their ability to think and work as individual designers (and as a team) as they interpret and create their own set designs for the play that is presented by the Musical Theater class at the end of the year. Light construction of stage pieces, as well as some small props and any additional design elements for the play will be the creations of the students in this class.

Expected Weekly Time Commitment for Homework:
4-6 hours as play approaches. Students may be asked to help on additional days as the play approaches.

Recommended Grade Level:  5-12th
