Aaron Shaver has loved and studied the power of communication since he started speaking in his youth group as a teenager. He earned a Masters in Public Relations from Kent State University. He utilized his passion for communication in the corporate world for over 12 years, working for billion-dollar brands. He also applied those same skills to grow local farmers markets and church ministries.
Aaron has taught in various environments, including the collegiate level, also as a former youth pastor, and he still teaches the elementary kids on Sunday mornings at church.

The student will need a Windows 7 or newer laptop or Mac laptop to use at home and at school.

Copy Fee: $20 (plus a fee for Bryan College e-textbook, around $70)
Fees: IMPORTANT - This class’s tuition ($500) is covered by Hope Dual Enrollment Grant, and DT does NOT charge tuition for the course, however we have a $150 admin fee for the year that covers our costs of offering this option.

Course Description/Outline/Objectives:
Becoming a more effective speaker and communicator is arguably the most useful skill you can acquire. This course is designed to enhance the students ability to inform and persuade others, a skill that is absolutely necessary for college or trades, in the lunchroom and the boardroom. Public speaking and strong written communication are skills highly valued by employers in every field.
In this class, the student will be introduced to how to develop a speech as it might be necessary in the working world, also how to develop written communications for various audiences, as well as understanding the nuances of advertising, public relations, and corporate communications.
Topics covered will include but are not limited to:
Public speaking methods and preparation techniques
Use of visuals (graphs, slides, charts) in speaking presentations
Basic principles of interpersonal and public relations communications
Awareness of fallacies in argument and in advertising
Using the power of facts, statistics, definitions and how to conduct research
How to tailor written messages to the needs of a particular audience
Expected Weekly Time Commitment for Homework: About 3 hours/week
