Course Description/Outline/Objectives:

Consumer Math is a practical, real-world mathematics course designed to equip students with the financial skills they need for everyday life. Using the Not Consumed Consumer Math curriculum, this course helps students understand how math applies to real financial decisions they will face as consumers, earners, and future household managers.

Throughout the course, students learn to manage money wisely by exploring topics such as budgeting, saving, banking, credit, interest, taxes, insurance, investing, and smart purchasing decisions. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, stewardship, and personal responsibility, encouraging students to evaluate needs versus wants and make informed financial choices.

Lessons are hands-on and application-based, with real-life scenarios, projects, and problem-solving activities that build confidence and competence in personal finance. This class is more project based and less problem based than your typical math course. For example, we'll use numbers discussed in class to make a budget for a family of four as opposed to a test on budgeting or multiple problems using percentages. By the end of the course, students will have a strong foundation in consumer math and be better prepared to navigate financial responsibilities with wisdom and independence.
