Aaron Shaver has loved and studied the power of communication since he started speaking in his youth group as a teenager. He earned a Masters in Public Relations from Kent State University. He utilized his passion for communication in the corporate world for over 12 years, working for billion-dollar brands. He also applied those same skills to grow local farmers markets and church ministries.

Aaron has taught in various environments, including the collegiate level, also as a former youth pastor, and he still teaches the elementary kids on Sunday mornings at church.

Course Name: High School Computer Literacy Basics

Materials:

  • The student will need a Windows 7 or newer laptop or Mac laptop to use at home and at school. Note that the student will need access to Google Drive, which will be used for teaching word processing, spreadsheets and presentation. If the student doesn’t have access to a laptop, let me know so we can determine what arrangements can be made for your student.

Course Description/Outline/Objectives: 
This hands-on, introductory course will acquaint students with basic computer application uses such as word processing, email etiquette, spreadsheets, and presentation software as well as cloud-based tools such as Google Drive and Dropbox.

The course is designed to ensure students learn to utilize the kind of computer skills that will take them beyond texting and social media and introduce them to the expectations of a collegiate learning environment and the working world. This course will not only focus on operating the available technology but also the soft skills to best adapt it to the needs of a work environment. For example: Avoiding the over-use of text in a visual medium like PowerPoint or when to add a bar graph/pie chart to provide a visual cue to the numbers they’ve calculated in Excel.

Topics covered will include but are not limited to:

  • File Maintenance and Organization

  • Production of Neat and Error-Free Documents

  • Use of Spreadsheets for Calculation / Tables / Graphs

  • Creation of Presentations using PowerPoint or Google Slides

  • Use of the Internet for Research

  • Electronic Communication such as Email and Chat Applications

  • Cloud Storage and Cloud Tools

Expected Weekly Time Commitment for Homework: About 2 hours/week for students who have good typing skills; longer otherwise.
