She graduated from Louisiana College in Pineville, Louisiana, where she majored in English Education and minored in Speech. Granny Lil did not begin her teaching career immediately. Instead, she spent several years as a stay-at-home mom and homemaker. When she did begin her teaching career, she found that it was more than a job; teaching for her was a calling. Over the years, Granny Lil has taught 5th grade, junior high, and high school. She also served on the board of her alma mater, Louisiana College. Granny Lil is thrilled to be affiliated with Discipleship Tutorial, where she can share her faith in the Lord and encourage her wonderful students to do the same. If you ask Granny Lil what she treasures most in her life, besides God, she would say her family: her husband of fifty-two years, her five children, her fifteen grandchildren, and her two great-grandchildren. <image:caption>BIO I was born and raised in Kingsport, Tennessee. I attended East Tennessee State University and Middle Tennessee State University. I married David (now deceased) in 1979 and moved to Middle Tennessee permanently. I first heard about home education from my pastor in 1978, and I told David before we were even married that I wanted to homeschool any future children we might have. God gave us three precious children and we were blessed and privileged to home educate them from birth through high school graduation. We began our home school journey in the fall of 1988 and continued for the next nineteen years. All three children have graduated from college and two have gotten their master’s degrees. Our son is an officer in the United States Army. Even more important than that, I am now a grandmother! During those nineteen years, we volunteered in various capacities in the homeschool community. David and I served on the Middle Tennessee Home Education Association Board of Directors for thirteen years, and we helped to organize and start the Home Education Association of Rutherford, Tennessee (HEART). I spoke at various conferences, graduations, and homeschool seminars and workshops. In the fall of 2002, I began teaching at Rutherford Tutorial Academy, where I continue to teach today. I also do private tutoring. In addition to teaching and tutoring, being a Mama and a Gigi, I also serve on the Powerfully Positive, Inc., Board of Directors.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BIO I am originally from Detroit, Michigan. I went to Central Michigan University and received my bachelor’s degree in 1994 in Human Environment. I became a nanny for a year to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and decided to get my master’s degree in education. I attended George Mason University and obtained my master’s degree in one year. I was a classroom teacher for five years and enjoyed every minute of it. I have had the privilege of homeschooling my three daughters for the last 15 years. My oldest daughter graduated from MTSU Dec 2024 with a business degree in Marketing. My middle daughter is attending UTC and and has made the Dean’s list every semester. She is also a member of the honor Society for the Psychology Department. My youngest daughter attends DT and is a sophomore and is the lead pitcher for Rockvale high school. Being able to educate my daughters has been the biggest blessing and has also allowed me to learn and grow in many different ways. I have been very involved in every tutorial and co-op that we have been a part of. I was a troop leader as well as the Troop Coordinator for American Heritage Girls. I was a lead teacher at a previous church for girls ministry. I also volunteer in the children’s department at our current church, The Experience community church. I am currently pursuing a second masters degree in counseling. I am attending Liberty University online and will graduate in May 2026 with a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and will be an LPC. Spending time with my daughters fulfills me in many ways. I also love to cook, shop, roller skate, watch movies, and take naps!</image:caption>

      <image:title>French 1</image:title>
<image:caption>BIO Stephanie Nance grew up in Nashville, TN, and went to Harding University to study French. She spent the summers during her college years working with the churches of Christ in French-speaking Europe (France, Switzerland and Belgium). She graduated with a BA in French and minors in Greek and Business Management and later an MEd in French Education. Following graduation, she was an adjunct for Harding University, leading a group of college students on Harding's first study abroad program to France and Switzerland. Stephanie wanted to move back to middle Tennessee to be close to her family and to fulfill her calling to teach high school students. She taught French at Oakland High School here in Murfreesboro for three years, during which time the French program doubled in size. During her time there, she wrote the curriculum for and started the French International Baccalaureate (IB) program and also led a group of high school students on a trip to France over Winter Break. After the birth of her first son and much prayer, she decided to leave the job she loved to be able to stay home full-time. She continued to tutor French out of her home for several more years until the birth of her third child at which time she wanted to be able to totally focus at home. Now her oldest is taking French for high school credit, and she is thrilled to have the opportunity to be back in the classroom sharing her love of the French language and culture with the students at Discipleship Tutorial. Stephanie is married to her best friend Tim, and they have five incredible kids (Henry, Martin, Cordelia, Arthur and Isabelle). Stephanie has homeschooled since 2014 when her oldest started kindergarten and is so very thankful for Discipleship Tutorial and Co-op where her family is involved and thriving.</image:caption>

      <image:title>High School Grammar</image:title>
<image:caption>BIO Lil Welch, known as Granny Lil, was born and raised in Louisiana. She also adores her students and friends. All are blessings in her life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>French 2</image:title>

She is also a certified K-12 Etiquette Consultant through The American School of Protocol. She has authored various works including a Biblically-based Etiquette curriculum, Bible studies, songs, press releases, and magazine articles. Her love of the written word further enabled her to serve as an editor for various books and publications. She loves to analyze great authors and find God’s message woven into their stories! And she loves to teach ‘how words come together’! She is a visual learner herself, so she endeavors to incorporate creativity into all of her lesson plans that will appeal to all three learning styles. Her passion for, and creative approach to, this class will fuel students’ love for learning. When she isn’t developing new ways to analyze great books, she loves spending time with Jesus, studying and writing, leading worship, planning ministry events at the family’s barn, grabbing coffee with friends, hanging out with her two precious daughters, taking walks at the lake with her husband Matthew, and cuddling her 100 and 170-pound Bernese Mountain Dogs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BIO Shelly Stanley enjoys teaching and has taught at DT through the co op and DT since 2021. Being a self proclaimed renaissance woman, Shelly has tried to vary her skills and abilities. She has enjoyed music from a very young age and many of her favorite teachers and most impactful adults were musicians in her life. Shelly was trained in piano from the age of 8, competing nationally yearly and performing multiple times a year. Shelly started receiving vocal training at age 15 and sang in the elite choir at her high school, Emory and Henry College, MTSU and then as an adult in church praise teams. Shelly has taught private piano lessons as well as music classes at Discipleship Tutorial's Co-op. She currently plays keyboard and sings each Sunday on her church's praise team. Shelly was taught sewing through a class at a community center and has since completed more than 20 quilts as well as numerous costumes and clothing items. History has always been a passion of Shelly’s and she was thrilled to teach a Tennessee history class to the 5-6th grade co op. The class was so loved that she decided to offer it to DT middle school students.</image:caption>

      <image:title>French 3</image:title>

<image:caption>BIO Neva Buttrey has always loved to teach and has spent most of her adult life looking for opportunities to do so. Her passion has been to tell of God’s love for others as she shared with them the skills and knowledge He has given her. She has shared in many ways, including Word and Excel classes at work, one on one training with her staff, Sunday school classes at North Blvd., and helping to train and support church staff with Word, Excel, and the church’s database systems. Neva majored in Information Systems at MTSU and went to work for the State of Tennessee just about the time the first Windows PC was purchased. She worked with all things “tech related” her entire thirty-plus years with the State of Tennessee, including but not limited to Desktop Technical Support, Network Administration, Webmaster, Application support, Application development, and SQL Server support. She also spent many years managing teams of individuals who did the same type of work. She recently chose to leave full time work so that she could pursue things that bring joy to her heart.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BIO Brian Smith is the Co-Owner of Cinematicfocus. Cinematicfocus was formed by Joshua Eldred and Brian Smith. Josh and Brian met at Fox17 News where they worked together for six years. Within those six years they started working together on various freelance jobs and realized that their talents meshed well together. Soon after they decided to start a small part time company called Cinematicfocus Video Productions, while at the same time keeping their full time jobs at Fox17 News. Cinematicfocus quickly grew larger and larger until they could no longer keep up with the demand of both jobs, so in late 2012 Josh and Brian both left Fox17 News and focussed on Cinematicfocus as their full time jobs. Cinematicfocus won an Emmy in 2015, and has been growing ever since.</image:caption>
