BIO     Katie Simmons is a graduate of Harding University with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and Middle Level Math and Science. Following graduation she spent two years teaching conversational English and working with the churches of Christ in Italy. Upon returning to the US, she began her teaching career at her old middle school in Decatur, AL. Her first year she taught an introductory Spanish language and culture class. For the next 7 years she taught 7th grade math.   After meeting and marrying her wonderful husband, Jonathan Simmons, she moved to middle Tennessee and began attending North Boulevard, where she and her husband are both active members. She accepted a position teaching math for Rutherford County Schools. The first three years she taught 8th grade math, before switching to 7th grade math the fourth year. Math has always been Katie’s favorite subject. She loves how “black and white” it is and finds great satisfaction in solving math problems! She is excited to now share her love of math, tutoring students and helping them to find a new appreciation and confidence in their own mathematical abilities. She is especially thankful for the opportunity to work with the Discipleship Tutorial! When not tutoring or spending time with her husband, family and friends, Katie also enjoys spending time developing her other passion/business, photography!

Course Description/Outline/Objectives: This thirty-two week class will introduce scientific concepts in the context of history, the days of creation are used as a structure through which a wide variety of scientific topics are introduced, including: light, energy conservation, air & water, botany, the solar system, zoology, and some aspects of human anatomy and physiology. We will use engaging hands-on labs as well as thought provoking discussions to help us understand the awe-inspiring work of our awesome Creator. It is expected that students arrive prepared to discuss and contribute to the class setting in order to enhance learning for each class member. Class time is meant to supplement and enhance learning done at home. Although the majority of experiments will be performed in class, students will be asked to perform a number of experiments at home in order to heighten learning. These experiments typically can be done with common household items. In addition, tests will be taken at home and signed by parents and then turned into tutor for grading.

Expected Weekly Time Commitment for Homework: 2-3 hours/week
