BIO     Valerie Chaffin instructs Foundations of Literature and Composition, American Literature and Composition, British Literature and Composition and English Literature and Composition (AP Preparatory). She is a licensed teacher with Advanced Placement certification and has been teaching high school English for over twenty years in public and private traditional schools as well as homeschool tutorials. She has earned Teacher of the Year twice in her teaching tenure, Tennessee’s Outstanding Teacher award, and has been featured in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers several times.    Valerie is happily married to her best friend, Christopher, and they have two teenage children who drew them into this exciting journey of homeschooling.

SPECIAL OUT OF CLASS REQUIRED MEETING:  During the spring semester this class will meet one day outside of the normal Tuesday sessions.  This is a required meeting, the date for which will be assigned during the second semester.  This extra class period will last from four to six hours and will allow us to read Our Town together since the language constitutes some difficulties.

Course Description/Outline/Objectives: This year-long course will explore a broad range of American literature by studying authors from the American colonial period through modern writers and will include the element of student essay composition regarding the material covered.

We will be studying a variety of short stories, poems and essays.  These will be provided in a Reader (required) that may be purchased from the instructor at a cost of $25.00.  The instructor will put the reader together and have it for the students to begin using on the first day of class.  Therefore, payment for this reader should occur at time of registration.
